What was the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway?

An expressway is a motorway or almost motorway-standard road that carries less traffic than a full motorway. The Oxford to Cambridge expressway was designed to connect the M4 to the M1 and unlock the economic potential of the countryside to the north of the M25. The expressway was one of six strategically important areas identified by the Department for Transport as of national importance in its 2015-2020 Road Investment Strategy recommendations (RIS1).

Realising the economic potential of the Oxford/Cambridge arc involves building not only a road but also up to one million new homes across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire by 2050.
